About Communities In Schools (CIS)

For over Forty 40 years, Communities In Schools (CIS) has been at the heart of bringing vital community resources directly into public schools. We believe that by doing so, we make these resources more accessible, coordinated, and accountable. Our founder, Bill Milliken, once said, “It’s relationships, not programs, that change children.” This idea shapes our mission—creating environments where meaningful relationships between adults and children can thrive. When young people feel cared for on a personal level and have a sense of belonging to a supportive community, they are more likely to succeed.

Today, CIS operates in 3,270 schools across the United States, serving 1.8 million students with the help of over 15,000 community volunteers and 114 CIS affiliate organizations. Our programs address both academic and non-academic needs, ensuring that students and their families receive comprehensive support. From needs assessments and tailored support plans to progress monitoring and evaluation, we are dedicated to making a positive impact in the lives of students.

Our Mission and Values

At CIS, our mission is simple: we are “all-in” for kids. We are passionate about providing the resources and support that young people need to stay in school and succeed in life.
